ÁJA VRZÁŇOVÁ: figure skater and business woman
In 1947 – 1950, she was the Czechoslovak figure skating champion. She first won a World Championship in 1949 in Paris and a year later, she defended her gold in London. She refused to give in to the pressure put on Czechoslovak representatives and claimed political refugee status in England in 1950. In the same year, she signed a contract with the skating show Ice Follies in the US and later with Ice Capades. When she ended her figure skating career, she and her husband, Pavel Steindler, operated several Czech-style restaurants. Since November 1989, she has lived in Prague – Vinohrady and in the USA.
